Ian’s Diary, August 2018 We’ve been breeding alpacas now for 5 years, and it is tempting to think that you’ve seen it all before, until something surprises you.
After the six births in May, cria season continued with the birth of the last four in July; all born to experienced mums. On the first of July, Vanilla gave birth to a wonderfully lustrous fawn boy.
We have ten cria due in 2018 but they split into two batches with the first six due in May and the remaining four in July. With the first six now safely delivered we can look back on

Cereta was born on 30th July 2016 – while Viv was away stewarding at the Fleece Show. Fortunately Ian was on hand and knew what to do when mum, Lady Bea, was struggling to birth the shoulders.
